Chapter twenty

Colden drummed his fingers on the arm of his throne, the one that sat in between his father and brother, overseeing the entire event. His eyes passed over the throne his sister had never sat in and the one his mother used to occupy, ignoring the pain caused from missing them. He was at the event, not part of it. He couldn’t wait to go down to the ice and skate with Icelyn, but she wasn’t there yet. His eyes scanned the crowd again. No one who even resembled her was there. He didn’t see her unique colorful hair that made her stand out in a crowd. The dress he sent her was nowhere to be seen. He shifted in his seat as he looked over the crowd again. There were two redheads skating together. If Holly and Douglas were here, where was Icelyn? He shifted again as his gaze darted across the ice one more time.

“Who are you looking for, son?” the king asked.

Colden’s head whipped over to look at his father. “What? I mean, why would you think I’m looking for anyone?”

“It’s fairly obvious. The constant shifting in your seat, the impatient sighs. Eyes looking over the crowd, over and over again. Seems to me you’ve found someone and are meeting with them tonight. Does this mean you’ve made a decision?”

“I don’t have an answer for that yet. But I was supposed to meet someone here. We’ve been spending time together during the festival.” Colden swiped his hand through his hair, uncomfortable with the conversation. He wasn’t used to sharing things with his father, especially things like this.

“According to town gossip, the two of you have been spending a lot of time together—some of it alone, in the ice maze.” Ollie elbowed him. Leave it to a younger brother to turn his life into a joke.

“I hope you decide soon, and I get to meet this person. Anyone that has you this fidgety must be worth meeting,” the king said.

The band stopped playing with a screech and silence fell over the room. The three of them followed the gaze of everyone in the room, across the ice, towards the entrance. In the doorway was Icelyn, or so he assumed. A masked petite woman stood in the dress he had sent. Her hair tumbled down in waves of pinks, blues, purples, and silvers, matching the tones of the dress as the light hit it.

Colden let out the breath he was holding. She was here; relief flooded through him. He thought she had stood him up, skipped the event altogether. But there she was, looking almost exactly as he imagined her when he bought the dress and the skates. The dress didn’t fit quite as he had imagined, but she was still a vision.

He stood as the masked woman made her way through the crowd to the dais. She seemed to be struggling to cross the ice, clutching the wall to keep her balance. The minute he saw the dress in the shop, he knew she would look like a queen in it, and she did not disappoint.
